The cultural life of Sotogrande and its surroundings is one of the most intense in southern Spain.

• Sotogrande Cultural Association

• San Roque

  Every month it offers a different series of lectures, exhibitions of paintings and photographs, and concerts at the Juan Luis Galiardo Theatre and the Municipal Art Gallery.

• Old Town

  The historical centre has been classified as a Site of Historical and Artistic Interest since 1975. The town's most important monuments are the Church of Santa María la Coronada (1735), the Palacio de los Gobernadores (18th century) and the bullring (1853) - the oldest in the province of Cádiz and one of the oldest in Andalusia. The most picturesque streets are San Felipe, with its ancestral homes and typical patios, San Nicolás and Historiador Montero. The Plaza de Armas is the town's most historic square where the "Pase de Muletas" - a stance used in bullfighting - was invented in 1720.

• The holidays

  The town's most important festivals are Easter week, which has been declared of National Tourism Interest in Andalusia, and the "Feria Real." The Great Procession of Good Friday is the most important and the only one held annually in Andalusia, and includes 14 different figures. The other main festival is the "Feria Real" in August, which ends with the release of the "Toro del Aguardiente" bull, a custom dating back to 1649.

Museums:

The city currently boasts three museums: the Carteia Museum (archaeology), the Luis Ortega Brú Museum (sculpture and imagery) and the Taurino Museum (local history of bullfighting).

• Ortega Brú Museum

  With its headquarters in the Palacio de los Gobernadores, the Museum has the largest collection of sculptures of the distinguished sculptor from San Roque, from Baroque imagery through to the latest expressionist pieces. C/ Rubin de Celis, San Roque, tfno. 956 781 587.

• Bullfighting Museum

  The San Roque bullfighting museum comprises an exhibition of the history of the art in the oldest bullring in the province and the fourth oldest in Andalusia. Plaza de Toros de San Roque (Old Town), tel. 956 781 587.
