History of Sotogrande Golf Resort

The beginning of a dream, the beginning of a project.

The plots in Sotogrande were the beginning of the realisation of Joseph McMicking's dream in the 1960s. The sense of a perfect location to live in southern Spain is reflected in the history of the prestigious houses and golf courses in Sotogrande.

The American businessman was charmed by the views, the vast terrain, the beach, the proximity to airports, the climate....
Together with his nephews Jaime and Enrique Zóbel, he bought the first property, called Paniagua, and began building. Soon after, Robert Trent Jones, a world-famous golf course developer, started building the Royal Golf Club of Sotogrande, playing his part in the creation of what is today a National Centre of Tourist Interest. Enrique Zóbel, in turn, also contributed to the growth of sports in the area with the construction of a large polo field in 1965.

In those years, the first international settlers - from the US to the Philippines - began to arrive to create a unique social community. Step by step, stone by stone, Sotogrande has become a global benchmark thanks to its planning excellence, its golf courses and its sports and leisure areas.
Nestled in a privileged location, it is part of the municipality of San Roque, a town with a rich history, where there still remain traces of prehistoric, Phoenician, Carthaginian and Moorish occupation settlements, among others.
